What is Personal Data / Personal Information

Personal data is defined by the General Data Protection Regulation (EU Regulation 2016/679) (the “GDPR”) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (collectively, “the Data Protection Legislation”) as ‘any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier’.

Personal data is, in simpler terms, any information about you that enables you to be identified. Personal data covers obvious information such as your name and contact details, but it also covers less obvious information such as identification numbers, electronic location data, and other online identifiers.

Data Protection Legislation, such as GDPR and any subsequent legislation, exists to help protect you and the personal data you share with companies such as ourselves to ensure we are fully transparent about what data we collect, our legal basis for collecting it, and how we may use it or process it, all of which is explained within this Policy.

Our Legal Basis for using Personal Data

GDPR outlines a number of different lawful reasons for which a company may collect and process your personal data.  These include:

  • Consent
For example, if you opt in to receive communications from us about our services.

  • Contractual Obligations
For example, if you sign-up to use our Application, we will need to collect personal information in order to set your account up.

  • Legal Compliance
For example, if we are required to pass on details of people involved in fraud or other criminal activity.

  • Legitimate Interest
For example, if you have signed up for one service from us, we may notify you about complimentary services which we think you may also be interested in.

Further information on the legal bases for processing personal data can be found on the ICO website (https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/lawful-basis-for-processing/).
